The Forest Grove Ranch is located in Central Montana in Fergus County. The Forest Grove Ranch is located 24 miles Southeast of Lewistown and 5 miles east of Forest Grove along the South Fork of McDonald Creek. Access to the property is by paved and county gravel roads. Encompassing 1,520 deeded acres the ranch is split between 75 acres of hay ground and the remainder being rolling pasture, creek bottoms, and timbered coulees.
The ranch remains unimproved and uncombed by buildings. Improvements have been made in the form of entirely new fencing and two wells.
Lewistown, with a steady population of 6,500, is in the Center of Montana surrounded by five area mountain ranges. Located to the north is the Missouri River and Fort Peck recreation area noted for all types of hunting and fishing recreation. Lewistown is 130 miles from Billings and 105 miles from Great Falls, both have service for major airlines. The local airport also has commuter flights available from Lewistown to Billings, provided by Gulf Stream Airlines.
Bear Gulch runs through the south portion of the ranch. Bordering the ranch is the Bear Gulch Pictographs. Recognized as being one of the oldest and largest archeological sites in North America with between 4,000 and 5,000 images. Along with Bear Gulch is the Big and Little Snowy Mountains known as the Snowy’s, with a collective elk herd of over 5,400 the Snowy’s offer great opportunity for hunting big game as well as other recreational opportunities. The Big Snowy Mountains are just south of Lewis-town that include 106,776 acres of Lewis and Clark National Forest. The most widely used accesses are from the Red Hill Road, Cottonwood Creek Road, and Crystal Lake Road. The area is designated a feder-al wilderness study area. The result is almost total solitude for anyone who travels the area exploring, hiking, or hunting within minutes from Lewistown.
Fortunately, this property lies within a climate zone that has good precipitation. Allowing for great cattle past and farm ground. Climate reports indicate that this ranch receives about 16 inches of rain. This property experiences the best of all four seasons Montana has to offer.
Wildlife and Habitat:
This ranch has a wide variety of wildlife. The habitat is ideal for Elk, Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, Turkey, Black Bear, and Upland Birds. Elk and Deer currently inhabit the ranch and the nearby territory. Located in the 411 hunting district the ranch is a draw for elk and a general license for deer. Along with the 411 hunting district, the 511 and 530 have a combined elk count of 5,400. The topography of the ranch allows for exceptional cover for all wildlife as well as a great hunt.
The Ranch is located in good rainfall belts and good growing seasons with productive soils. The Central Montana area is known for its quality farms and ranches and along with quality cattle which are home to numerous Registered Cattle Herds. Management on the tillable lands is mainly for hay production.
This area is great cattle country with about a 16-18 inch precipitation zone and about a 110-day growing season. There are about 75 acres of hay ground both dryland and sub-irrigated which are productive and reliable. Pasture grasses include mountain brome, green needle, needle and thread, Timothy, and western wheat. Hay production is alfalfa, orchard grass, smooth brome grass, pubescent wheat-grass, and intermediate wheatgrass. Tonnage per acre varies but averages are around two ton.
The South Fork of McDonald Creek runs through this property for about 1.5 miles. 1 mile of Bear Creek as well as other seasonal streams. Developed springs and two well reside on the property.
When on the Ranch it is a peaceful uninterrupted experience. Watching the wildlife freely move throughout the ranch’s open benches and thickly timbered draws is a daily experience. The mountain view is definitely something to enjoy from every area of the ranch. The Ranch gives the right amount of privacy without being exempt from civilization being only 21 miles from Lewistown.
